Patients appeal for government intervention as KATH doctors’ strike disrupts services
Patients at the Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital (KATH) are calling on the government to intervene as a strike by doctors continues to disrupt healthcare services at the facility.
The industrial action, declared by the Komfo Anokye Doctors Association (KADA), has significantly affected operations at the hospital's Outpatient Department (OPD), leaving hundreds of patients stranded.
Although emergency services remain operational, most outpatient services have been suspended, causing inconvenience to patients, many of whom travelled from various parts of the country for scheduled appointments.
The strike follows the suspension of the hospital's Chief Executive Officer (CEO) by the Ministry of Health after management temporarily halted new admissions at the Accident and Emergency (A&E) Centre due to overcrowding concerns.
Hospital management maintained that the decision was necessary to protect patient safety, while the doctors' association has described the suspension of the CEO as unfair.
With the impasse continuing, affected patients are urging the government, the Ministry of Health and hospital management to engage in dialogue and resolve the dispute to allow the full resumption of services at the country's second-largest referral hospital.
