US donates 3 Freightliner trucks worth $600k to support GAF engineering operations
The United States government has donated three Freightliner trucks to the Ghana Armed Forces (GAF) to strengthen its engineering and construction capabilities and support ongoing infrastructure projects across the country.
The trucks, valued at US$214,000 each, were handed over under the Africa Crisis Response Initiative during a ceremony attended by officials from both countries.
Speaking at the event held on Thursday at the Engineering Training School, Teshie, the Chargé d'Affaires of the United States Embassy in Ghana, Rolf Olson, said the donation reflects the longstanding partnership between Ghana and the United States and their shared commitment to capacity building and infrastructure development.
According to him, the vehicles will support the Ghana Armed Forces in transporting heavy equipment, including road graders, backhoes and front-end loaders, for engineering and construction operations.
Mr Olson noted that the military is currently undertaking key national projects, including work on the Accra-Kumasi Expressway, the construction of new barracks and the development of forward operating bases.
He said the trucks would enhance the Armed Forces' ability to move equipment efficiently and support critical infrastructure projects.
The US diplomat commended the Ghana Armed Forces for their professionalism and contributions to peacekeeping, border security, disaster response and national development.
He said the GAF has earned a reputation as one of the most professional and capable military institutions on the continent through years of dedication and service.
Mr Olson recalled the deployment of personnel from the 48 Engineer Regiment to Jamaica in December 2025 to support reconstruction efforts following a hurricane, describing it as an example of the strong cooperation between Ghana and the United States.
He also highlighted the broader security partnership between the two countries, which includes military training exercises, capacity-building programmes, infrastructure support and educational exchanges.
According to him, the donation forms part of ongoing efforts to deepen defence cooperation and strengthen the operational capacity of the Ghana Armed Forces.
Mr Olson acknowledged the contributions of officials from the U.S. Embassy, the Embassy Military Group and the leadership of the Ghana Armed Forces in facilitating the delivery of the vehicles and arrangements for training in their operation and maintenance.
He expressed confidence that the trucks would be put to effective use in supporting engineering operations and national development projects.
The donation adds to a series of collaborative initiatives between Ghana and the United States aimed at strengthening security cooperation, infrastructure development and institutional capacity.
