Ato Forson: Defence Minister Ag thanks President Mahama for GAF leadership and guidance

The Acting Defence Minister, Dr Ato Forsson, has paid glowing tribute to the President and Commander-in-Chief of the Ghana Armed Forces for his leadership and unwavering support for the military, describing it as central to Ghana’s peace, stability and development.

Speaking at the 2025 West African Soldiers’ Social Activities (WASSA) held at Burma Camp, the Minister said the President’s economic reset and commitment to good governance continue to inspire hope among Ghanaians and motivate the Armed Forces to work tirelessly towards a secure, stable and prosperous nation.

He expressed profound gratitude to the President for honouring the event with his presence and for providing consistent guidance that has strengthened cooperation, professionalism and achievements within the Ministry of Defence and the Ghana Armed Forces.

The Acting Defence Minister also commended the gallant men and women of the Armed Forces for their sacrifice, dedication and resilience, noting that their commitment has kept Ghana united and strong in the face of both internal and external challenges.

He assured personnel and the general public that the Ministry of Defence remains committed to providing strategic policy direction to keep the Ghana Armed Forces responsive, modern and operationally ready. According to him, government will continue to strengthen institutional capacity and align defence priorities with emerging security threats within Ghana and the sub-region.

Touching on welfare, the Minister stressed that the well-being of military personnel remains a top priority of the current administration. He said government has taken significant steps to improve accommodation, healthcare, training, career progression and overall living standards for service personnel, measures aimed at boosting morale, professionalism and operational effectiveness.

He further acknowledged that military welfare extends beyond serving personnel to retirees and veterans who dedicated the prime of their lives to national service. In this regard, he disclosed that concerns of the 1995 and 1996 year groups, as well as over-age retirees, are receiving serious attention through ongoing constructive engagement to arrive at fair, compassionate and sustainable solutions.

As the Armed Forces marked WASSA, the Acting Defence Minister called on personnel to reflect on the unity, tradition and shared values that bind them together. He concluded by expressing appreciation to the Military High Command and all personnel of the Ghana Armed Forces, thanking them on behalf of the Ministry of Defence and the Government of Ghana for their service and sacrifice to the nation.
