BoG Communications Director urges responsible economic reporting amid rising misinformation
The Director of Communications at the Bank of Ghana, Dr Bernard Ato Otabil, has urged journalists to uphold responsible, accurate and ethical reporting on economic and financial issues amid the growing spread of misinformation.
Dr Otabil made the call while speaking at a PRINPAG training workshop on economic literacy on the theme: Resettling the Economy: The Role Journalist, News Publishers and Media Owners'' at Ada Foah in the Greater Accra Region.
He stressed the importance of accuracy, context and professional ethics in safeguarding public trust and improving public understanding of economic matters.
He noted that in today’s information-driven environment, economic and financial news has the power to influence markets, investor confidence and household decision-making, making the role of journalists more critical than ever.
“Journalists must ensure that economic reports are factual, balanced and properly interpreted, as misinformation can have far-reaching consequences,” he said.
According to Dr Otabil, enhancing journalists’ understanding of economic concepts will help minimise the misrepresentation of monetary and fiscal policies, while also promoting informed and constructive national discourse.
He commended PRINPAG for organising the training and encouraged media practitioners to continuously build their capacity in economic reporting to support transparency, accountability and economic stability.
