The National Chief Imam, Sheikh Dr. Osman Nuhu Sharubutu, has extended his congratulations to Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia following his success in the New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) presidential primary, describing the outcome as a positive reflection of Ghana’s democratic values and religious coexistence.

Dr. Bawumia secured the party’s flagbearer position after a closely fought contest held on Saturday, January 31, 2026, in which he outperformed four other aspirants.

The Chief Imam commended the NPP for organising a calm and orderly congress, encouraging party faithful to use the process as a reminder of the importance of internal democracy, respect for the constitution, and peaceful inter-religious relations.

In a statement released on Monday, February 2, His Eminence also acknowledged the conduct of the defeated candidates, praising them for accepting the outcome and promoting unity, which he said demonstrated political maturity and adherence to democratic principles.

He emphasised that although political strategies and perspectives may vary, the overarching goal of national development should guide all actions.

The Chief Imam further applauded the Ghana Police Service and the Electoral Commission for their professionalism, fairness, and transparency, noting that their efforts strengthened public confidence in the electoral process.

He concluded by underscoring the collective responsibility of citizens in safeguarding democracy, stressing that shared commitment to democratic ideals ultimately yields lasting national progress.
