Ghana deploys 121 nurses to Antigua to expand international job opportunities for health professionals
The Ministry of Health, in collaboration with the Ghana Labour Exchange Programme, has deployed 121 Ghanaian nurses to Antigua as part of the government’s efforts to create more job opportunities for health professionals.
Speaking at the deployment ceremony, Health Minister Kwabena Mintah Akandoh revealed that Ghana currently has a backlog of over 80,000 qualified health workers who have completed their training but are yet to be absorbed into the public sector.
He explained that the government is addressing this challenge through bilateral agreements with countries interested in employing Ghanaian health workers.
Antigua is the latest country to benefit from the initiative, with similar arrangements ongoing with Jamaica, Barbados, and Trinidad.
At the send-off ceremony, the nurses were urged to uphold Ghana’s values, professionalism, and strong work ethic as they represent the country abroad. Some of the nurses expressed hope that the opportunity would provide valuable international experience while contributing positively to Ghana’s image
