Defilement: Even if you claim a child offered themselves to you, the law will deal with you, says Gender Minister warns

The Minister for Gender, Children and Social Protection, Dr Agnes Naa Momo Lartey, has strongly cautioned that anyone who takes advantage of a child claiming the child offered themselves to them is still in danger of the law.
"You know what the laws of the land are. Even if you are underage and you offer yourself to a man, and the man takes advantage of you, if you're the one who even went there, the law says that once you're underage, you should be protected and that's all we'll do," she said.
Dr Momo Lartey was reacting to an alleged sexual harassment case involving an assistant headmaster of Kwame Nkrumah University of Science & Technology (KNUST) Senior High School (SHS) captured in a viral video.
"As to whether the girl took the video or went there [voluntarily], don't let us justify abuse and all of these things going on. Sexual harassment is abuse, and abuse is sexual harassment. Don't make excuses for it," she asserted.
She emphasised the importance of her posture, "And let us be in awareness so we can support people and protect them from being victimised and stigmatised. So that people will not be afraid to report."
Dr Lartey underlined that condemning the KNUST incident alone was not enough, calling for concrete measures to address and prevent further occurrences.
She assured the public that her ministry was closely monitoring the situation and would collaborate with relevant authorities to ensure accountability and justice for the victims.
