The latest Quarterly Food Insecurity Report from the Ghana Statistical Service (GSS) shows a decline in the number of Ghanaians experiencing food shortages, falling to 12.5 million in the third quarter of 2025 from 13.4 million in Q2.

Nationally, the proportion of the population affected by food insecurity dropped to 38.1% in Q3, down from 41.1% in the previous quarter, indicating a slight improvement.

Despite this overall progress, the report points to ongoing disparities by gender and region. Between Q1 2024 and Q3 2025, female-headed households consistently experienced higher levels of moderate food insecurity than their male-headed counterparts. At its peak in Q1–Q2 2025, food insecurity in female-headed households reached 44.1%, compared with 38.7% among male-headed households.

Regional differences remain significant. The Upper West, North East, and Volta Regions recorded the highest prevalence of food insecurity, while the Oti Region posted the lowest rates, improving from 23.8% in Q1 to 18.4% in Q3 2025.
