GA/R: Okponglo residents stage protest over alleged land takeover
Residents of Okponglo in the Greater Accra Region are up in arms over an alleged land takeover by individuals believed to be National Security personnel.
The disputed land, previously owned by a former New Patriotic Party (NPP) politician, has been sold to a private individual who intends to construct a fuel station on the site.
The residents, who claim rightful ownership of the land, are strongly against the project, citing concerns over the destruction of their community and potential health risks.
During a recent demolition exercise, structures occupied by squatters were torn down, further escalating tensions.
One resident, speaking to the media, expressed outrage over the alleged takeover, stating, "We voted overwhelmingly for John Dumelo.
They have come to destroy the only public toilet we have in Okponglo.
Where do they want us to go and ease ourselves?"
The residents are determined to resist any further development on the land and have vowed not to allow the fuel station to be built.
The protest highlights the ongoing struggles between landowners and private developers in the area, with the Okponglo Royal Family also weighing in on the matter.
The family had previously warned against invasion of their lands, emphasising the importance of respecting property rights and adhering to the rule of law.
