GAF deploys 400 additional troops to Bawku under Operation Maidabuuri II

In a decisive move to curb escalating violence and insecurity in Bawku, the Ghana Armed Forces (GAF) have deployed 400 additional troops to the area under the ongoing security initiative, Operation Maidabuuri II.
The reinforcements, drawn from the Northern, Southern, and Central Commands, were officially dispatched on Tuesday, July 29, 2025.
The deployment underscores the government’s renewed commitment to restoring law and order in the conflict-affected municipality.
Bawku has been plagued by periodic violence fueled by entrenched ethnic tensions and criminal activity. Operation Maidabuuri II, already operational in the region, seeks to stabilise the situation by enhancing military presence, bolstering intelligence-gathering, and fostering collaboration with local communities.
During a briefing ahead of the deployment, the Chief of Army Staff, Major General Lawrence Kwaku Gbetanu, urged the troops to uphold discipline, professionalism, and integrity in the execution of their duties.
“You are representing not just the Ghana Armed Forces but the entire nation,” he stated.
“There will be rigorous monitoring to ensure high operational standards are maintained and the mission is not compromised.”
The GAF has reiterated that the operation will go beyond military enforcement to include community engagement and trust-building, which are seen as essential components in achieving lasting peace in Bawku.
