GPS: Mostly peaceful Enough is Enough demo ended with policeman 'injured, receiving medical attention'
The Ghana Police Service (GPS) has thanked “the general public for their cooperation during the just-ended demonstration” organised by the National Democratic Congress (NDC).
The Enough is Enough demonstation took place today, Tuesday, September 17, 2024, “in all 16 regional capitals of the country”.
According to the police’s Tuesday evening statement, “the demonstration ended peacefully in all locations” except for “an isolated incident at Kumasi in the Ashanti region”.
Against “the arrangements agreed” upon between the GPS and the organisers, the statement explained, “demonstrators attempted to push their way into the premises of the Electoral Commission” resulting in chaos, during which demonstrators “pelted the Police with stones”.
“One Police officer was injured during the incident and he is receiving medical attention,” the statement continued, noting, also, apart from commencing an “investigation into the incident”, the Inspector-General of Police, Dr George Akuffo Dampare, had contacted the injured policeman “and wished him well”.

Earlier, the GPS refutted reports by the media there was a shooting incident at the Kumasi EC branch. It said, also, no one had been injured by the police.
According to Class Media Group's (CMG) correspondent Elisha Adarkwa, during the chaos after protesters attempted to force their way into the EC premises, three people were injured and three were, also, arrested by police.
In a video shared by Adarkwa, a man with a bandage wrapped around his head spoke to Pan African TV narrating how he had bled after a police officer attacked him with the butt of his gun.
"When we got to the entrance of the EC office, the police pushed me and I pushed them also. That's when one of them hit the back of my head with the back of his gun," the unnamed man told the media present.
Elisha Adarkwa also shared a video of a man who appeared to have been injured on the right shin, wearing a bandage on the said spot.
Additionally, Regional Chairman of the NDC Augustus Nana Kwasi Andrews was recorded reporting to the Regional Commander of Police (COP) present that "one of your men, while we were entering, looked me in the face and slapped me".
Ultimately, the NDC successfully submitted their petition to the EC, demanding a positive response within seven days. Regional Secretary Dr Frank Amoakohene outlined irregularities in the voter register requiring a forensic audit and blamed the police for the violence.
