Violence erupts at unveiling of DRIP in Gomoa West
An inauguration event for earth-moving equipment under the newly launched District Road Improvement Programme (DRIP) in Gomoa West Constituency of the Central Region turned violent, with clashes reportedly breaking out between supporters of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) and the governing New Patriotic Party (NPP).
While the full details of the altercation remain unclear, initial reports suggest that tensions escalated between members of the two political parties over the pasting to the NPP's Parliamentary Candidate's posters on the equipment.
The District Chief Executive (DCE) Bismark Nkum, who also serves as the NPP’s Parliamentary Candidate for Gomoa West, recounted the incident.
According to him, the President of the Gomoa Akyempim Traditional Council and the President of the Gomoa Assin Traditional Council were about to inaugurate the equipment when the sitting Member of Parliament, Richard Gyan-Mensah, arrived with a group of agitated NDC supporters.
Mr. Nkum alleged that the MP disrupted the event, wielding a gun, chains, and a cutlass.
“This guy is one of the operators—people who have been trained—and the MP himself hit him with a gun.
So, a whole MP, who was sent to Parliament as the leader of Gomoa West, came and pulled a pistol in front of the police,” Nkum explained.
He further called on the police to investigate whether the firearm in question was licensed and whether the MP had the legal authority to brandish it in such a manner.
The police have yet to comment on the situation or provide additional details regarding the ongoing investigation.
