Ghana Medical Assoc. updates members on 'challenges with implementation of Vehicle Importation Tax Waiver'

The Ghana Medical Association (GMA) has updated its members on the challenges with the implementation of the Vehicle Importation Tax Waiver.
“As part of our Conditions of Service signed on 27th March, 2024, the Association and the Employer represented by the Ministry of Health and Ministry of Finance, commenced the implementation of the Vehicle importation tax Waiver in July, 2024,” a GMA stated dated February 19, 2025, noted.
“This was to enable medical doctors and dentists to be able to secure vehicles to facilitate their commute to work and response to emergencies,” it explained.
“The change in government has resulted in a halt in processing of the waivers with some applications pending final approval by the Ministry of Finance. This has resulted in vehicles being stuck at the port accumulating charges by the day and risking confiscation and auction,” the statement signed by GMA President Dr (Med) Frank Serebour bemoaned.
“The Executives have been engaging various stakeholders to resolve the delays and work towards a resumption of the waiver,” it added.
The GMA further advised members on what to do in three unique instances.
“While we engage the Minister of Health and the Minister for Finance, we appeal to colleagues who have applied to exercise restraint as we work to see the way forward,” it said.
“Applicants with the means may also consider clearing their cars to minimize accumulation of port and demurrage charges.
“Members who are considering importing vehicles using the waiver are advised to hold their plans. The NEC assures members that it is actively engaging to ensure the Vehicle Importation Tax Waiver which is part of our signed Conditions of Service is restored as soon as possible.”
