Ghana paid a heartfelt tribute to the late former First Lady, Her Excellency Nana Konadu Agyeman-Rawlings, during the flag-raising ceremony marking the 80th anniversary of the United Nations, held on Friday in Accra.

The solemn event, attended by government officials, diplomats, and representatives of the UN system in Ghana, celebrated both the enduring ideals of the UN and the remarkable legacy of one of Ghana’s most influential women.

In his address, the Minister for Foreign Affairs and Regional Integration, Samuel Okudzeto-Ablakwa, described Nana Konadu as a true embodiment of the values the United Nations stands for — equality, justice, and human dignity.

“Nana Konadu epitomised the values the UN represents; she was the voice of the voiceless, a fearless advocate for gender equality, and a tireless champion of the vulnerable,” he remarked.

The Minister recalled her transformative work through the 31st December Women’s Movement, which empowered countless women across Ghana and advanced the cause of gender equality long before it became a global development priority.

As a mark of deep respect, the Minister called for a minute of silence in her honour and directed that both the Ghana and United Nations flags be flown at half-mast throughout the day.

He concluded by noting that Nana Konadu’s towering legacy would continue to inspire future generations to pursue justice, equality, and empowerment for all.

“Her life’s work has left an indelible mark on our national history and on the hearts of those she uplifted.

May her soul rest in perfect peace,” he said.
