Ghana reaffirms commitment to deepening ties with Japan
Vice President Prof. Jane Naana Opoku-Agyemang has reaffirmed Ghana’s commitment to deepening its long-standing bilateral relations with Japan, pledging continued cooperation in areas of mutual interest.
The assurance was given on Thursday, January 15, 2026, when the Vice President met a Japanese delegation led by the State Minister of Foreign Affairs, H.E. Dr. Kunimitsu Ayano, at the seat of government.
The meeting was attended by the Minister for Foreign Affairs, Mr Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, and the Deputy Minister for Trade, Agribusiness and Industry, Mr Sampson Ahi, and focused on strengthening diplomatic, trade and investment ties between the two countries.
Prof. Opoku-Agyemang expressed Ghana’s appreciation for Japan’s sustained support over the years, describing the relationship as one built on mutual respect, trust and shared development goals.
She reaffirmed Ghana’s readiness to work closely with Japan to expand cooperation, particularly in trade, investment and capacity building.
The Japanese delegation commended Ghana for its efforts to create a favourable environment for business and investment. They cited the successful Business-to-Business (B2B) Matchmaking Event and Business Forum as evidence of Ghana’s commitment to strengthening economic collaboration with Japanese enterprises.
Ghana and Japan share a long-standing diplomatic relationship spanning nearly 70 years.
Japan’s development cooperation in Ghana includes 50 years of volunteer service by the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA), as well as the 100-year presence of the Noguchi Memorial Institute for Medical Research, which has played a key role in public health and research in the country.
Both sides reaffirmed their commitment to further strengthening the partnership in support of sustainable development and shared prosperity.
