The Greater Accra Regional Minister, Linda Obenewaa Akweley Ocloo, has directed all Metropolitan, Municipal and District Chief Executives (MMDCEs) to immediately mobilise emergency response teams into flood-affected communities following Monday's heavy rains that triggered widespread flooding across the region.

In a statement issued on Monday, June 29, the minister expressed sympathy to individuals and families affected by the floods, assuring residents that government is working to protect lives and provide relief.

"My heart goes out to all individuals and families who have been affected by this unfortunate incident. I sincerely sympathize with those who have suffered losses, displacement and other hardships, and I want to assure every affected resident that you are not alone. We stand with you during this difficult period," she stated.

Ms Ocloo said all MMDCEs have been instructed to work with the National Disaster Management Organisation (NADMO), emergency response teams and relevant technical officers to intensify rescue operations, evacuate trapped residents where necessary, assess the extent of the damage and provide immediate assistance to affected communities.

She stressed that every MMDCE is expected to remain actively engaged until the flood situation is brought under control.

The regional minister said the Greater Accra Regional Coordinating Council is collaborating closely with NADMO, the Ghana National Fire Service, the Ghana Police Service and other emergency agencies to coordinate response efforts and safeguard lives and property.

With the Ghana Meteorological Agency forecasting additional rainfall, the Minister urged residents to remain vigilant by avoiding unnecessary travel and staying away from flood-prone areas, drains and fast-flowing floodwaters.

She also appealed to parents and guardians to keep children away from floodwaters and refrain from allowing them to cross flooded roads or drains.

Ms Ocloo further called on the public to cooperate with emergency response personnel and comply with all safety directives, assuring residents that the Regional Coordinating Council, Metropolitan, Municipal and District Assemblies, and emergency agencies will continue working tirelessly to support affected communities until the situation stabilises.
