Interior Minister alarmed over 102 illegal border entry points in Volta Region
The Minister for the Interior and Member of Parliament for Asawase, Muntaka Mohammed-Mubarak, has raised concerns over what he describes as serious national security risks posed by the existence of numerous unapproved entry routes into Ghana through the Volta Region.
He warned that the situation could potentially expose the country to criminal activities, including cross-border crime and possible terrorist infiltration, if not urgently addressed.
Speaking during an engagement with chiefs, clergy, and Islamic clerics in Ho as part of a two-day working visit to the region, the Minister disclosed that security agencies have identified 102 unauthorized crossing points along Ghana’s eastern border in the Volta Region.
According to him, these illegal routes are being used by foreign nationals to enter the country without undergoing proper immigration screening and documentation processes, undermining national border security systems.
Despite the Volta Region’s long-standing reputation as one of the most peaceful parts of Ghana, Hon. Muntaka noted that the proliferation of these unapproved entry points remains a significant security concern requiring urgent attention.
He further explained that the challenge has contributed to the establishment of more than 60 inland security checkpoints across the country, although only two currently operate within the Volta Region itself.
The Interior Minister also expressed concern that some local residents are allegedly assisting undocumented migrants by providing transport and logistical support, thereby making it more difficult for security agencies to track and properly document individuals entering the country.
He stressed that such activities weaken national efforts to regulate migration and safeguard internal security, calling for stronger community cooperation with security services to address the problem.
