Residents of Kumasi can expect stricter sanitation enforcement measures from July as the Metropolitan Assembly prepares to deploy sanitation guards to monitor compliance with environmental regulations.

Mayor of Kumasi, Richard Ofori Agyemang Boadi, announced the initiative during an interaction with the media, expressing concern over what he described as the continued disregard for sanitation laws by some residents.

According to the Mayor, despite ongoing arrests and prosecutions of individuals caught dumping refuse indiscriminately, the practice remains widespread in parts of the city.

He noted that authorities have already prosecuted several offenders but said more work remains to be done to promote discipline and responsible waste disposal.

As part of the renewed enforcement drive, sanitation guards, popularly referred to as "Nsamansaman," will be deployed to various communities to support efforts aimed at keeping the city clean.

Mr. Ofori Agyemang Boadi indicated that he intends to personally support the campaign and ensure that sanitation regulations are strictly enforced.

The Mayor stressed that the initiative forms part of broader measures to improve public health, protect the environment and prevent waste from clogging drains and waterways.

City authorities believe stronger enforcement will help change attitudes towards sanitation and encourage residents to take greater responsibility for their surroundings.

The announcement comes as local authorities continue efforts to address sanitation challenges and reduce environmental hazards within the Ashanti Regional capital.

Officials say the exercise will be accompanied by public education campaigns and enforcement actions to ensure compliance with existing sanitation by-laws.

For the Kumasi Metropolitan Assembly, the objective is clear: a cleaner city, improved public health and greater accountability among residents when it comes to waste management.
