President John Dramani Mahama has praised the deepening friendship between Ghana and Zambia, describing it as a bond rooted in shared history, solidarity, and a common vision for Africa’s future.

Speaking at a state banquet hosted in his honour by Zambian President Hakainde Hichilema in Lusaka, President Mahama thanked the Zambian government and people for the warm hospitality extended to him and Ghanaians living in the country.

“I wish to thank all Zambians for accepting our compatriots here and treating them just like your own,” he said, noting the strong social ties between the two countries, including intermarriages. “There is no better way of bringing people together than the bonds of family.”

President Mahama said discussions with President Hichilema revealed striking similarities in the economic paths of both countries, particularly their shared challenges and reliance on mining.

“We realised that Ghana and Zambia are like twins of the same mother, facing similar economic and financial challenges,” he stated.

He disclosed that both leaders agreed to elevate bilateral cooperation beyond existing frameworks, proposing an enhanced economic development partnership.

“Notwithstanding continental alliances, we must underpin them with stronger bilateral relationships,” President Mahama said, assuring that steps agreed upon would be acted on “expeditiously.”

Reflecting on the visit, President Mahama said he felt “genuinely at home” in Zambia and described his engagement with President Hichilema as candid and purposeful. “Leadership is not about power; it is about service,” he remarked.

He also hailed recent agreements between the two countries, particularly the decision to allow visa-free travel.

“These are more than diplomatic instruments. They are statements of trust that say to our people: you belong with one another,” he said.

President Mahama said the visit honoured the Pan-African legacy of Ghana’s Dr. Kwame Nkrumah and Zambia’s Dr. Kenneth Kaunda, adding, “Tonight, I feel strongly that we are living that legacy.”

He concluded by proposing a toast to President Hichilema and his spouse, the enduring friendship between Ghana and Zambia, and “the Pan-African dream that continues to guide both our nations forward.”
