President John Dramani Mahama has officially launched the Accra Reset Initiative, a bold effort aimed at charting new, self-sustaining pathways for financing healthcare and other critical sectors across Africa.

The high-level roundtable, held in New York, brought together world leaders, former presidents, and heads of major global institutions.

It was co-chaired by President Mahama and former Nigerian leader Olusegun Obasanjo, with the participation of the Director-General of the World Health Organisation (WHO), the World Trade Organisation (WTO), and senior executives from leading international financial institutions.

In his keynote address, President Mahama urged African leaders to move decisively away from donor dependency and adopt collective, homegrown financing solutions.

He argued that the continent’s future security and prosperity depend on building resilient internal mechanisms capable of withstanding global shocks and uncertainties.

Outlining the vision behind the Accra Reset Agenda, Mahama said Africa must draw lessons from decades of fluctuating donor support and recognise that external assistance is no longer a reliable foundation for development.

“We cannot continue to gamble Africa’s future on the unpredictability of foreign aid,” he stressed.

“The time has come for us to take charge of our own development path.”

The initiative is expected to spark a continental dialogue on how African nations can mobilise domestic resources, strengthen regional cooperation, and innovate financing models to ensure sustainable healthcare systems and broader development goals.
