'More questions than answers': Prof Aning on National Security cash, gold bust

“The National Security guys have a lot of explanations to do,” Prof Emmanuel Kwesi Aning, Director Faculty of Academic Affairs & Research (FAAR), Kofi Annan Peacekeeping Training Centre (KAIPTC), has said.
This follows the National Security locating 20ft containers numbering 10 at a warehouse in Sapieman, Ga South, Accra, in which were found heaps of US dollars, counterfeit Ghana cedis, and gold bars. According to the National Security, they were looking for two other containers, apart from being on a manhunt for four suspects, including a ringleader simply called Alhaji.
Speaking to Joy News on Pulse, Prof Aning said, “There are more questions than answers.
“People should be hauled before whatever appropriate institutions to answer questions. How do we know there are not 10 or 20 more containers?”
He wondered how the containers got into the country without an alarms going off. He
“They’ve come through an international port, a member of the World Customs Organisation, it’s got all the scanners and bla, bla, bla, and if they’ve not been able to arrest those who did the scanning and the clearance at Tema, and there’s National Security at Tema Port anyway, then it raises fundamental questions,” he asserted.
“Probably, this is just the tip of the iceberg, this is just supposed to divert attention, post it. How many containers have come in? I think Mr [Abdul-Osman] Razak [National Security Coordinator], Kofi Boakye [Director of Security Operations] and Prosper Bani [National Security Advisor] have their jobs cut out for them. And I’m hoping just as we did with the ORAL, the President will give them a timeframe… We need to see some people punished for this and jobs lost.
“This does not give confidence that we have functional institutions. No way.”
