NAS personnel face growing security risks, Greater Accra Manager calls for enhanced protection
The Greater Accra Regional Manager of the National Ambulance Service (NAS), Daniel Asare, has raised concerns over the safety of ambulance crews, urging stronger security measures to protect emergency responders who increasingly face danger while on duty.
He warned that ambulance teams attending to calls, especially during late-night hours, particularly between midnight and 1 AM., are sometimes confronted by armed robbers in certain areas, placing their lives at risk even as they work to save others.
Speaking on ChannelOne TV on Friday, February 20, 2026, Asare recalled a fatal incident involving one of the service’s officers.
“About three years ago, one of our officers from the Somanya centre was attacked and the driver was shot, and he lost his life. We need absolute protection during odd hours,” he said.
Beyond the physical dangers, he noted that such attacks take a lasting psychological toll on personnel, with many responders experiencing post-traumatic stress after witnessing violence or losing colleagues in the line of duty.
According to him, these challenges extend beyond individual trauma and can undermine the overall morale and effectiveness of emergency services.
Thus, he stressed that improved coordination and security support are necessary to ensure ambulance crews can carry out their lifesaving work without fear.
