The Muslim community in Ghana has been plunged into mourning following the "assasination" of the Supreme Leader of the Islamic Republic of Iran, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, the National Chief Imam, Shaikh Dr Osman Nuhu Sharubutu, has announced.

In a message of condolence to the government and people of Iran, the Grand Imam described the late Supreme Leader as a pious man who exemplified the harmony between religious devotion and governance, using both as instruments for social order and national development.

He also hailed Khamenei as a symbol of resistance and hope for the oppressed.

The National Chief Imam condemned the actions of the United States and Israel, which he said led to the martyrdom of Ayatollah Khamenei during the holy month of Ramadan.

He also expressed sorrow over the loss of all lives in the ongoing conflict, irrespective of nationality or faith, urging warring parties to uphold the sovereignty of nations, respect human dignity, and protect the sanctity of Ramadan.

The National Chief Imam called for an end to hostilities, emphasising that escalating rhetoric must give way to peace-building initiatives.

He highlighted the importance of interfaith harmony in addressing the largely geo-political conflict and advocated for a global order where justice prevails over power, ensuring lasting peace and security for humanity.

Concluding his statement, the National Chief Imam prayed for Allah’s mercy upon the soul of Ayatollah Khamenei and all those who have perished "on the path of righteousness".

The message was issued through Dr Mohammed Marzuc Abubakari Azindoo, Personal Assistant to the National Chief Imam.
