A Nigerian government delegation on a fact-finding visit to Ghana has expressed satisfaction over the safety and security of Nigerian nationals residing in the country, following recent social media reports suggesting hostility towards Nigerians.

The visit was prompted by viral videos and unverified reports on social media alleging protests in Ghana that called for Nigerians to leave the country—sparking concern over the well-being of Nigerian citizens and their properties.

Led by Ambassador Bianca Odumegwu-Ojukwu, Minister of State at Nigeria’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the delegation held high-level engagements with Ghana’s Minister for Foreign Affairs and Regional Integration, Mr. Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa.

During the meeting, Minister Ablakwa offered strong assurances regarding the safety and peaceful stay of Nigerian nationals in Ghana.

He reaffirmed the Ghanaian government’s commitment to upholding the rights of all residents, regardless of nationality.

Mr Ablakwa also underscored the deep-rooted historical and cultural bonds between Ghana and Nigeria, emphasising the need to preserve and strengthen diplomatic and people-to-people relations between the two West African neighbours.

Ambassador Odumegwu-Ojukwu, while expressing appreciation for Ghana's cooperation, cautioned against the dangers of misinformation spread through social media.

She noted that inflammatory videos and unverified content online can easily trigger unnecessary tension and harm bilateral ties.

“We must be careful with our online expressions.

Reckless rhetoric can threaten the peace and unity we have worked hard to build,” she stated.

Both ministers reaffirmed their commitment to collaboration and open communication, and pledged to continue working together to prevent the spread of misinformation and promote mutual respect between their nations.
