Police arrest suspect in murder of UCC student
The Ghana Police Service has arrested a 39-year-old suspect in connection with the murder of University of Cape Coast (UCC) student, Innocentia Atsufui Avinu.
According to a police statement, the suspect, identified as Michael Mensah, was arrested by the Inspector-General of Police's Cyber Vetting and Enforcement Team on June 15, 2026, at about 7:15 PM at the Pedu Lorry Station in Cape Coast, Central Region.
Police said the arrest followed sustained intelligence-led operations.
Preliminary investigations indicate that on June 11, 2026, at about 6:48 PM, the suspect, who claims to be a teacher but also works as a driver, picked up the deceased from Ayensu Plaza within the UCC hostel enclave.
Investigators said he subsequently took her to Hutchland Beach, where she was last seen.
The police said investigations into the case are ongoing and that further updates will be communicated as they become available.
