Prez. Mahama orders resumption of work on stalled Eastern Regional Hospital project
President John Dramani Mahama has directed contractors to return to the site of the abandoned New Eastern Regional Hospital project and restart construction, signalling renewed government commitment to completing the long-delayed healthcare facility.
The announcement was made by the Eastern Regional Minister, Mrs. Rita Akosua Adjei Awatey, during the launch of the Eastern Regional Hospital's 100th anniversary celebrations in Koforidua on Thursday, June 11.
Mrs. Awatey said the President's directive reflects the administration's determination to strengthen healthcare delivery through the expansion and modernisation of critical health infrastructure across the region.
She noted that the decision to resume work on the project forms part of broader efforts to address increasing healthcare needs and ensure residents have access to improved medical services.
"His Excellency has instructed the contractor to return to the site and continue work on the hospital project. As we commemorate a century of healthcare service, we are not only reflecting on our achievements but also reaffirming our commitment to building a more resilient and efficient healthcare system for future generations," she stated.
The Medical Superintendent of the Eastern Regional Hospital, Dr. Aiden Suntaa Saanwie, welcomed the development, describing it as a significant step toward enhancing healthcare capacity in the region.
He indicated that management is simultaneously investing in workforce development to prepare for the facility's eventual completion and operation.
According to Dr. Saanwie, plans are underway to provide advanced training and specialist opportunities for health professionals as part of preparations for the hospital's anticipated transition into a teaching institution.
