Police, soldiers in fisticuffs, near fire exchange at CMB

There were near fisticuffs and exchange of fire between the police stationed at the Greater Accra Regional Police headquarters and some soldiers who were guarding a bullion van at the Cocoa Marketing Board (CMB) area in the Central Business District of Accra.
The incident occurred on Monday, March 27, 2023, between the hours of 4:30 and 5: 00 pm.
An eye witness, Thomas Moro, told the host of the Ghana Yensom morning show, Odehyeeba Kofi Essuman on Accra 100.5 FM on Tuesday, March 28, 2023, that what happened between the soldiers and the police was an eye-sore.
He said the police marched upon the soldiers who were driving in a military pick-up escorting the white bullion van.
According to him, the bullion van and the military pick-up were at top speed in front of the Greater Accra Regional Police headquarters in an attempt to enter the CBD through the road in front of the Central Motor and Traffic Department (MTTD) of the Ghana Police when the military officers' vehicle was blocked by a police dispatch rider at the intersection leading to the MTTD.
This, the eyewitness said, did not go down well with the military officers who attempted to explain they were on official duty guarding the bullion van.
He said the police dispatch rider refused to listen to the military officer who approached him.
The police officer was subsequently heckled by the military officers.
This, the eyewitness said, infuriated the other police officers in the regional headquarters barracks.
He said other officers in the barracks cocked their guns and managed to have the said military officer who heckled the police dispatch rider arrested and put behind bars at the regional headquarters cells.
He stressed that the military officers also called for reinforcement to have their men at the scene protected.
The witness further added that this led the police officers to further regroup and, armed to the teeth, readied themselves to face the military officers.
He noted that the officers prevented the military officers from entering the premises of the police regional command, leading to some fisticuffs.
He reported that it took the intervention of one military colonel who prevailed on the police hierarchy to calm the armed police officers down, leading to the release of the arrested army man.
