President John Dramani Mahama has expressed sympathy to the families of Ghanaian traders who lost their lives in a terrorist attack in Burkina Faso, confirming that the Ghana Armed Forces is mobilizing to bring the injured home for treatment.

Speaking at the opening of the Ghana Tree Crops Investment Summit & Exhibition at the Accra International Conference Centre on Tuesday, February 17, 2026, President Mahama said the attack targeted a group of traders traveling to Burkina Faso to purchase tomatoes.

He explained that the traders were ambushed while conducting business in a village, with armed insurgents carrying out the attack.

Several Ghanaians were killed, while some survived.

“On behalf of the government and the people, we extend our condolences to the families of those who were killed or injured,” the president said.

Highlighting the dangers faced by Ghanaian merchants near the Sahel region, he emphasised that the government is acting quickly to assist the survivors.

The Ghana Armed Forces (GAF) have been deployed to evacuate the wounded and ensure they receive medical care in Ghana.

“The Ghana Armed Forces are arranging for the injured to be brought back home to continue their treatment safely,” President Mahama added, reaffirming the government’s commitment to protecting its citizens abroad.
