President Mahama reduces Hajj fees by ₵13k, increases passengers by 1k
The Hajj fee for 2025 has been set at GH₵62,000 ($4,130), Shamima Muslim, the Deputy Presidential Spokesperson, has announced on Facebook.
In more Wednesday, February 5 posts, Ms Muslim indicated Ghana’s Hajj quota had been increased to 5,000 pilgrims, too. In 2024, the quota was 4000.
Additionally, she disclosed the governing John Mahama-led National Democratic Congress (NDC) administration had inherited a staggering Hajj debt of over US$5.4 million.
Meanwhile, the reduction of Hajj fares comes in fulfillment of President Mahama’s campaign promises in 2024, which he emphasised during a recent engagement with Islamic leaders at the National Mosque.
In 2023 and 2024, Hajj travellers paid about GH₵75,000 in fees.
The Hajj journey to Mecca, Saudi Arabia, is mandatory for all Muslims of capable financial and physical standing as a matter of grave spiritual responsibility. Once an individual successfully completes the journey, depending on their sex/gender, they are called an Alhaji or a Hajia.
