Speaker's residential security endangered as surrounding lands, buildings sold to private developers – Parliamentary Service
Almost all the buildings and parcels of land around the Speaker of Parliament's official residence at Cantonments have been sold to private developers, the Parliamentary Service has said.
In a statement, the Service said the situation compromises the security of the Speaker.
The Parliamentary Service said high-rise apartments have been constructed all around, leaving the Speaker’s residence as an “island and endangering the safety and security of the Speaker”.
Clarifying comments by the Speaker about the near-sale of his residence, the Parliamentary Service said in its Wednesday, 22 November 2023 statement, “A visit to the official residence of Rt. Hon. Speaker will unveil that almost all the surrounding buildings and accompanying parcels of land have been sold out to private developers. High-rise apartments have been constructed all around, leaving the Speaker’s residence as an island and endangering the safety and security of the Rt. Hon. Speaker.”
