Tempane DCE condemns the killing of elderly women over witchcraft allegations
The District Chief Executive (DCE) for the Tempane District, Mbilla Joseph Ayaaba, has expressed deep dismay and condemnation over the gruesome killing of two elderly women in the Sumaduri community of the district, following accusations of witchcraft.
Speaking to our reporter, Moses Apiah, the DCE described the incident as “very disheartening” and unacceptable in a modern society.
He said the news of the killings deeply affected him, prompting him to immediately contact the police to confirm whether the matter had been officially reported.
“When I got the information, I had to enquire from the police whether it had been reported to them, and they indeed said they were contacted,” he stated.
He explained that the police retrieved the bodies and conveyed them to the hospital for investigations before handing them over for burial, while also pursuing the suspects involved.
Mr. Ayaaba noted that initial attempts to arrest the suspects were unsuccessful as they had fled the community, but subsequent operations led to their arrest.
He strongly condemned the act, stressing that witchcraft accusations and mob justice should not be encouraged in society.
“People cannot just see others and start attacking them as witches and wizards.
What is the scientific proof?” he questioned. “Even if people are suspected, there are better ways of handling such issues. No one should take the law into their own hands, beat, insult, or even kill another person. It is very unfortunate.”
The DCE expressed shock that some of the suspects were family members of the deceased. “That is the most surprising thing. How will you see your own family member and beat her to death because of witchcraft allegations? Assuming that person was your mother, would you do that?” he asked, urging residents to reason as responsible members of a peaceful society.
The incident, which occurred on January 18, 2026, involved the alleged killing of Mariama Jato, aged 58, and Nachuagutugu Dunwaag, aged 75.
Eight persons, including seven family members and a pastor, have been arraigned by the Garu District Police Command before a court in Bolgatanga.
They face charges of murder, conspiracy to commit murder, and abetment of murder.
