UE/R: Comms Ministry immediately shuts down Gumah FM in Bawku over recurrent conflict

The Minister for Communication, Digital Technology, and Innovations, Sam ‘Dzata’ George, has directed the immediate shutdown of Gumah (104.9) FM station, Bawku, Upper East Region.
The move followed “urgent national security concerns raised by the Upper East Regional Security Council (REGSEC),” a Tuesday, February 18, 2025, statement by the ministry said.
“At an emergency meeting held on February 11, 2025, REGSEC extensively reviewed recent security developments in Bawku and parts of the North East Region. Intelligence reports indicate that Gumah FM Station has been used as a platform to incite violence, disrupt public order, and escalate tensions in the region,” the statement explained.
“The directive to shut down the station is issued in accordance with Section 13(1)(e) of the Electronic Communications Act, 2008 (Act 775), which empowers the National Communications Authority (NCA) to suspend or revoke frequency authorisations in the interest of national security, public order, or the public interest.”
In line with this directive, the statement, continued:
1. Gumah FM Station must cease all operations with immediate effect.
2. Ongoing monitoring will be implemented to prevent the establishment of alternative platforms that may be used to propagate violence or further destabilize the region.
“The Ministry of Communication, Digital Technology, and Innovations urges all media entities to operate responsibly and in strict adherence to their frequency authorisation conditions. The Government remains committed to safeguarding national security, public safety, and the rule of law,” the statement underlined.
“Further updates will be provided as necessary.”
