UE/R: Navrongo MP revives 8-year-abandoned Upper East Innovation Centre, set for completion in six months
The Member of Parliament for Navrongo Central, Simon Aworigo, has launched a major initiative to restore the long-abandoned Upper East Regional Innovation Centre in the Kassena-Nankana Municipality.
The facility, built eight years ago to support ICT education and digital innovation, has remained unused and left to deteriorate—until the MP’s latest intervention.
At a brief ceremony to hand over the site to the contractor, Mr. Aworigo announced that the centre is expected to be fully operational within the next six months.
The revival project is being undertaken in partnership with the Ghana Investment Fund for Electronic Communications (GIFEC), the agency originally responsible for establishing the centre.
Mr. Aworigo explained that the refurbished facility will serve as a hub for digital literacy, coding and software development training, and broader skills development for the youth in the Upper East Region.
“This centre has the potential to transform ICT education and empower our young people with the skills needed in today’s digital economy.
We are committed to ensuring it fulfils the purpose for which it was built,” he said.
The Upper East Regional Manager of GIFEC, Martin Aberba, shared similar optimism, noting that the restored centre will greatly enhance the government’s national coding initiative.
He added that the facility will be equipped with modern technology to support training programmes designed to build the capacity of students and young innovators across the region.
Mr. Aberba also disclosed that GIFEC is working to revive several other abandoned community ICT centres in various districts.
He stressed, however, that the successful restoration of these facilities will require strong collaboration from District Assemblies.
The revival of the Upper East Innovation Centre marks a significant step in boosting digital development and creating opportunities for young people in the region.
