University of Ghana School of Law wins Supreme Court 150th anniversary ‘Moot Court’ competition
The University of Ghana School of Law has emerged as the overall winner of the Moot Court Competition organised as part of activities marking the 150th anniversary of Ghana's Supreme Court.
The Ghana Institute of Management and Public Administration (GIMPA) placed second while the University of Cape Coast (UCC) finished third.
Pentecost University was also recognised as the “Best Private Law School” in the competition.
Speaking at the opening of the grand finale, Supreme Court Judge, Justice Richard Adjei Frimpong, commended the participating students for their impressive performance, saying they have demonstrated sound legal reasoning, analytical thinking and advocacy skills throughout the contest.
He noted that the competition was designed to build the confidence of aspiring lawyers and equip them with the ability to present coherent and persuasive legal arguments while responding effectively to judicial questioning and therefore recommended to the chief Justice of the Republic of Ghana, Justice Paul Baffoe Bonne, that the competition should be made a regular feature of judicial activities.
"We owe it to the younger ones to build future lawyers and Judges who would demonstrate professionalism in their work" he said.
The two-day competition brought together students from 11 Universities across the country, providing them with a platform to sharpen their courtroom advocacy and legal research skills through simulated court proceedings.
The grand finale was presided over by rtd. Supreme Court Judge, Justice Agnes Dordzie, as part of the Supreme Court's 150th anniversary celebrations which seek to promote excellence in legal education and deepen the appreciation of Ghana's judicial system.
