The Minister for the Interior, Mohammed-Mubarak Muntaka, has disclosed that authorities have identified 102 unapproved border routes in the Volta Region, raising concerns about border security and transnational crime.

Speaking before Parliament's Assurances Committee on Tuesday, July 7, 2026, Mr Muntaka said Ghana currently has 48 official border crossing points but faces increasing challenges in monitoring numerous unauthorised entry routes.

"We have 48 legitimate crossing points into our country. But the illegitimate ones... we are shocked to realise that the last time I was in the Volta Region alone, we've identified 102 unapproved routes," he said.

The minister said the problem extends beyond the Volta Region, with similar concerns in the Upper East, Upper West, Bono and Western regions, which all share borders with neighbouring countries.

He warned that the unapproved routes could be exploited by criminal networks to move narcotics, contraband and other prohibited goods into or through Ghana without passing through official immigration and customs checkpoints.

"If we don't focus on trying to secure even these unapproved routes, what is going to simply happen is that we'll become a transit point; they can use us as a transit point," he said.

Mr Muntaka also revealed that the government has established 63 inland security checkpoints across the country to help intercept illegal movements beyond the borders.

While acknowledging public concerns about the number of checkpoints and the delays they can cause, he said they remain important for intelligence gathering and security operations.

The minister urged security personnel to adopt more intelligence-led approaches to minimise inconvenience to travellers and called on residents in border communities to support security agencies by reporting suspicious activities.
