The Volta Region has officially inaugurated the National Apprenticeship Programme (NAP) with a matriculation and induction ceremony held at the Jubilee Park in Ho today, Monday, August 25, 2025.

The landmark event brought together newly admitted apprentices, master craft persons, government officials, and stakeholders in skills development.

The event was graced by the Volta Regional Minister, James Gunu, and the Chief Executive Officer of the National Youth Authority (NYA), Osman Abdulai Ayariga.

Mr Gunu described the launch of the NAP in the Volta Region as a “pivotal moment” for both the youth and the economic transformation agenda of the region. He explained that the initiative, a flagship programme of President John Mahama’s administration, was designed as a direct response to youth unemployment and skills gaps in Ghana.

"Through this initiative, government is not just creating opportunities but building a skilled workforce that will shape the future of this country," he added.

He further disclosed that the programme was backed by a GH¢300 million allocation in the 2025 national budget to ensure its successful rollout and sustainability.

Mr Osman Abdulai Ayariga, hailed the programme as one of the “boldest expressions” of the NYA’s mission to empower young people.

"The National Apprenticeship Programme is a bridge between raw talents and employable skills, between dreams and livelihoods, between potential and prosperity," he added.

He said that the initiative tied in seamlessly with the Volta Region’s long-standing “heritage of resilience and industry,” commending the resourcefulness and discipline of the region’s youth.

For the pilot phase in the Volta Region, a total of 2,060 apprentices have been enrolled and will undergo training under 412 Master Craft Persons across various trades. Beneficiaries are expected to receive free, high-quality, competency-based training, monthly stipends, and essential start-up equipment upon graduation.

The ceremony was memorable by the administration of a matriculation pledge, as well as the symbolic presentation of identification cards and training materials to the apprentices, marking the official start of their journey under the programme.

Stakeholders expressed optimism that the NAP would not only reduce unemployment but also stimulate entrepreneurship, promote self-reliance, and enhance the region’s economic fortunes.
