Wontumi Campaign defends plea negotiations in EXIM Bank matter
The campaign team of New Patriotic Party (NPP) Ashanti Regional Chairman, Bernard Antwi Boasiako, popularly known as Chairman Wontumi, has defended his decision to enter plea negotiations with the State in a matter involving a facility obtained from the Export-Import Bank (EXIM Bank).
In a statement signed by the Director of Media and Communications for the Wontumi Campaign, Ewuradjoa Coleman, the team said the facility was secured to support a large-scale agricultural enterprise aimed at contributing to food security, employment creation and agricultural development.
According to the statement, the farming project was a legitimate investment and not a speculative venture. It noted that Chairman Wontumi's involvement in agriculture has been publicly recognised, citing his award as Ashanti Regional Best Farmer First Runner-Up during the 34th National Farmers' Day celebration in 2018.
The statement said his 10,000-acre maize farm in the Sekyere Central District was recognised by the Ministry of Food and Agriculture for its contribution to agricultural production.
The campaign explained that large-scale farming operations are often affected by challenges including market fluctuations, climatic conditions, production difficulties and other unforeseen factors that can impact projected returns and the ability to meet financial obligations.
It stated that Chairman Wontumi's decision to engage in plea negotiations reflects what it described as a commitment to resolving the matter through lawful means rather than engaging in prolonged legal proceedings.
The statement further argued that plea negotiations are recognised under Ghanaian law and should not be interpreted as proof of guilt or wrongdoing.
According to the campaign, the law provides avenues for negotiated settlements, including arrangements that may lead to the withdrawal of charges where appropriate.
The statement maintained that the decision should be viewed as an effort to resolve a commercial and legal matter within the framework of the law while avoiding lengthy litigation.
It added that Chairman Wontumi remains committed to fulfilling his obligations, respecting the laws of Ghana and continuing his contributions to agriculture and national development.
