Adams Mahama murder: Accra High Court discharges Afoko, Asabke
An Accra High Court has discharged Gregory Afoko and Asabke Alangde, the two men accused of murder and conspiracy to commit murder in connection with the 2015 killing of the Upper East Regional Chairman of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Alhaji Adams Mahama.
The decision came after repeated delays and the consistent absence of the prosecution in court.
The case, now in its third attempt, followed a hung jury in the second trial. During that trial, Asabke Alangde was convicted of conspiracy to commit murder and sentenced to death by hanging, while the jury failed to reach a verdict on the murder charge. For Gregory Afoko, the jury returned a hung verdict on both murder and conspiracy counts.
A retrial was, therefore, ordered for Afoko on both charges and for Alangde on the murder charge.
Although pleas were taken in January 2024 and several witnesses were presented, progress stalled as the attorney general’s office repeatedly requested adjournments.
On Monday, December 1, 2025, after what the court described as the seventh or eighth adjournment, no prosecutor appeared to update the court on the status of the case.
In response, the presiding judge discharged both accused persons for want of prosecution. The panel of jurors was also formally discharged, with the court expressing appreciation for their service.
The ruling effectively brings the long-running case to a halt unless the state decides to initiate fresh proceedings.
