Barker-Vormawor arrested for 'various unlawful acts' during Democracy Hub demo
Oliver Barker-Vormawor, the leader of the Democracy Hub, has been arrested by the Ghana Police Service in connection with recent protests organised by the said group in Accra.
The protests, which resulted in roadblocks and the obstruction of traffic at key intersections, led to heightened tensions between demonstrators and law enforcement officers.
Barker-Vormawor, a key figure in the movement, was taken into custody after the police announced they were on a manhunt for him.
Already, some 42 persons were arrested during the Sunday, September 22, 2024, protest and are expected to be put before the court.
The Democracy Hub protests, aimed at drawing attention to the country's economic situation and other governance issues, saw several protesters arrested earlier for engaging in acts the police deemed unlawful.
Mr Barker-Vormawor had initially evaded capture, leading to a manhunt by the police. His arrest brings a significant turn in the events surrounding the protests, which have drawn national attention.
According to a police statement, Barker-Vormawor is being held for his alleged involvement in unlawful actions, including inciting public disorder and leading the group’s blockade of major roads.
The police have stated the actions of the protesters, under Mr Barker-Vormawor’s leadership, caused severe inconvenience to commuters and disrupted the city's daily activities.
