Immigration officer killed, another injured in attack at Gbintri checkpoint

A late-night attack on the Ghana Immigration Service (GIS) checkpoint at Gbintri in the East Mamprusi Municipality of the North East Region has left one officer dead and another critically injured.
The incident occurred around 1:30 a.m. on Friday, October 3, 2025, when unidentified gunmen opened fire on GIS personnel stationed at the checkpoint.
Assistant Immigration Control Officer II (AICOII) Rafiq Mohammed was shot and killed instantly, while his colleague, AICOII Oppong Daniel, sustained gunshot wounds to the jaw and back.
He is currently receiving emergency treatment at the Baptist Medical Centre in Nalerigu.
Police investigators who visited the scene recovered several AK-47 shell casings and a GIS rifle with registration number GH/GIS/HQACN 668516-1646.
A joint security team, led by Superintendent Francis Brobbey, Municipal Police Commander for Gambaga, and DIS Moro Tanko Mohammed, Regional Intelligence Officer of GIS, has since launched a manhunt for the attackers.
Authorities have assured the public that investigations are ongoing and that all efforts are being made to identify and apprehend the perpetrators.
The GIS and the Police Service say further updates will be provided as the case develops.
