Kasoa ritual murder: Juvenile Court to sentence 15-year-old today

Barring any unforeseen circumstances, the Juvenile Court in Accra is set to sentence the 15-year-old boy found guilty of conspiring with another teenager to murder a 10-year-old boy at Kasoa in the Central Region for a money ritual.
The sentencing, originally scheduled for January 16, 2025, was postponed due to the unavailability of a social enquiry report, which is crucial in determining an appropriate sentence for the juvenile.
Under Section 24 of the Juvenile Justice Act, 2003 (Act 653), a probation officer is required to prepare a report, detailing the juvenile’s background, circumstances of the offence, and sentencing recommendations.
In October 2024, a seven-member jury found the two teenagers guilty of conspiracy to commit murder and the substantive charge of murder.
The High Court, presided over by Justice Lydia Osei Marfo, sentenced 18-year-old Nicholas Kini to life imprisonment.
However, the sentencing of the 15-year-old was referred to the Juvenile Court, in accordance with Section 18(1) of the Juvenile Justice Act, which mandates special procedures for sentencing juveniles.
Since then, the 15-year-old has remained in police custody, awaiting today’s sentencing.
