Police arrest suspect linked to election day shooting in Kasoa Zongo
The Central East Regional Police Command has arrested a 35-year-old man, Mujaheed Suraj, in connection with the shooting of two persons during the 2024 general elections at Kasoa Zongo in the Central Region.
According to the Police, the suspect was arrested on January 17, 2026, following intelligence-led operations.
He is accused of shooting and injuring Bukari Inusah, aged 34, and Tanimu Adamu Tanko, aged 44, during voting on December 7, 2024, at the Odupon Kpehe School Park.
A police statement said officers responded to a distress call around 12:30 pm on election day after reports that a man had fired shots indiscriminately at the polling area.
The shooting also caused damage to a stationary pick-up truck with registration number GT 9550-P.
Upon arrival at the scene, police found the two victims severely injured and bleeding, alongside the damaged vehicle.
The victims were initially rushed to the Kasoa Polyclinic for emergency care before being transferred to the Winneba Trauma and Specialist Hospital for further treatment.
The suspect, however, fled the scene and went into hiding.
Following months of investigations, police tracked and arrested Mujaheed Suraj at Kasoa Zongo.
During interrogation, he reportedly confessed to the crime and admitted ownership of a pump-action shotgun used in the attack.
Police said the suspect failed to produce any legal documentation for the firearm, claiming instead that he purchased it in 2024 for GHS4,000 from a cattle herdsman at Gomoa Potsin in the Central Region.
Efforts are currently underway to trace and arrest the alleged seller of the firearm.
The Police confirmed that the suspect remains in custody assisting with investigations, while the two victims are responding positively to treatment but have yet to make full recoveries.
The statement, signed by DSP Victor Kofi Dosoo, Head of Public Affairs for the Central East Region, assured the public of its commitment to clamping down on crime and called for continued cooperation from the public to ensure safety and security across the region.
