Police foil armed robbery plot in Accra; two suspects killed, officer injured

The Ghana Police Service has successfully thwarted a planned armed robbery in Accra, following an intelligence-led operation by the Police Intelligence Directorate (PID).
The operation, which took place on Monday, July 15, 2025, was based on credible intelligence that five armed men were lodging at a hotel in Labadi, plotting to rob a foreign national in Cantonments.
Acting swiftly, the police deployed surveillance units to monitor the suspects, who were later intercepted while en route to their target location in a Toyota Yaris.
Upon detecting the presence of police, the suspects opened fire on the officers, injuring one.
The police returned fire, critically wounding two of the suspects.
Both were rushed to the Police Hospital, where they were pronounced dead.
The injured police officer sustained gunshot wounds to the legs and underarm and is currently receiving treatment. Authorities say he is in stable condition and responding well.
Items retrieved from the scene included two pump-action guns loaded with ammunition, live cartridges, three mobile phones, talismans, and other items believed to be linked to the foiled crime.
A manhunt is currently underway to apprehend the remaining three suspects, who managed to flee the scene.
The Ghana Police Service has reaffirmed its commitment to public safety and urged the public to volunteer any information that could lead to the arrest of the fugitives.
