Chief of Staff advocates stronger agricultural integration in schools

Chief of Staff Julius Debrah has called on the Ghana Education Service (GES) to make agriculture a central part of the school curriculum.
Speaking in Accra on Friday, August 29, during the launch of the School Farm Initiative, Mr. Debrah said the programme is intended to help reduce government spending on the Senior High School feeding programme by encouraging schools to rely more on their own farm produce.
He explained that the initiative fits into the government’s broader vision of positioning agriculture as the backbone of food security, job creation, and youth empowerment.
Mr. Debrah stressed that the success of the programme depends on collective effort, urging teachers, parents, and unions to play their part.
“The GES must ensure that agriculture is fully integrated into teaching and learning—not as punishment, but as a practical tool for education.
School heads and Conference of Heads of Assisted Secondary Schools (CHASS) must also provide leadership at the institutional level to keep the farms vibrant and sustainable,” he said.
He further appealed to teacher unions, including the National Association of Graduate Teachers and Coalition of Concerned Teachers-GH, to support the initiative wholeheartedly.
Describing the School Farm Initiative as “a strategic investment in the nation’s future,” Mr. Debrah emphasised that its sustainability will require strong collaboration from all stakeholders.
