The Minister for Fisheries and Aquaculture Development, Madam Emelia Arthur, has inaugurated a Ministerial Committee tasked with developing the academic curriculum for the Anomabo Fisheries College.

The committee’s work will ensure that educational outcomes align with the practical needs of Ghana’s fisheries and aquaculture sector.

The Anomabo Fisheries College was first initiated in 2012 by the late President John Evans Atta Mills to strengthen training and skills development in the fisheries industry.

However, the project stalled due to funding challenges.

It has now been revived under the current government, which has renewed its commitment to completing the infrastructure and operationalising the college.

Outlining the committee’s mandate, the Minister said it will:

Review existing models of fisheries and aquaculture training institutions.

Propose a name, vision, mission, and core values for the college.

Recommend an organisational and governance structure.

Identify priority academic programmes and design a curriculum framework.

Determine staffing needs and requirements.

Madam Arthur stressed the need for strong collaboration with stakeholders from academia, research institutions, industry practitioners, government, and NGOs to ensure that the curriculum is comprehensive, relevant, and future-focused.

She tasked the committee to submit its final report and recommendations to the Ministry for consideration, expressing confidence in the collective expertise of its members.

According to the Minister, the curriculum will be developed to meet the standards of the Ghana Tertiary Education Commission as well as the Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) framework.

“The establishment of the Anomabo Fisheries College and the development of its curriculum mark a turning point for Ghana’s fisheries and aquaculture sector,” she said, noting that the initiative will create a transformative educational platform to meet industry needs while anticipating future challenges.
