GTEC intervenes in UCC leadership crisis

The Ghana Tertiary Education Commission (GTEC) has stepped in to resolve the recent leadership dispute at the University of Cape Coast (UCC).
The conflict arose between the Council Chairman, Prof. S H Amonoo-Koafi, and the university community over the termination of Vice Chancellor Prof. Johnson Nyarko Boampong's appointment.
As the regulatory body for tertiary institutions in Ghana, GTEC has directed Prof. Boampong to remain in office while the issues surrounding his appointment are thoroughly reviewed.
In a letter dated Friday, 2 August 2024, Prof. Ahmed Abdulai Jinapor instructed the Registrar of UCC to furnish GTEC with all relevant documents related to the renewal and purported termination of the Vice Chancellor's appointment.
This move is to ensure that the university's management continues without interruption.
Prof Jinapor also requested that all correspondence, court processes, and communications on the matter be forwarded to GTEC for careful consideration.
The dispute has put UCC in the spotlight, with significant attention from both traditional and social media.
The Council Chairman's action to terminate Prof. Boampong's appointment has led to considerable tension within the university community, with various stakeholders threatening to protest to demand the Vice Chancellor's reinstatement.
GTEC’s decision to order Prof. Boampong’s reinstatement while the matter is reviewed aims to ensure fair and transparent operations on campus. Seven members of the UCC Governing Council, identifying themselves as “Concerned Members of UCC Governing Council,” noted in a letter dated August 1, 2024, that the termination issue was not discussed in their last meeting on July 30, 2024.
They challenged the Council Chairman to produce minutes of any such discussion.
The UCC branch of the University Teachers Association of Ghana (UTAG) and other institutions have also expressed their displeasure with the termination, describing it as a unilateral decision by the Council Chairman.
