Gov’t releases ¢50 million to WAEC to ensure smooth conduct of BECE, WASSCE

The government has disbursed GHS50 million to the West African Examination Council (WAEC) to support the administration of the 2024 Basic Education Certificate Examination (BECE) and the West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE).
In a statement released on Thursday, 29 August 2024, the Ministry of Education (MoE) highlighted that this funding reflects the government's commitment to fulfilling its financial obligations to WAEC, ensuring the Council's operations proceed without any interruptions.
“We wish to reassure all stakeholders, especially students, parents, guardians, and the general public, of our dedication to sustaining an environment that fosters seamless, efficient, and high-quality education for all Ghanaian students,” the statement said.
This payment follows an earlier release of GHS47 million in June to facilitate the conduct of the BECE.
Before this, WAEC had only received GHS2.3 million of the GHS95.83 million owed, prompting the Council to request at least 50 per cent of the total debt to conduct the exams and additional funds to process and release results.
The latest disbursement is expected to alleviate concerns and enable WAEC to carry out its mandate effectively, offering much-needed relief to thousands of students, parents, and educators across the nation.
