Opoku Prempeh pledges to strengthen Free SHS policy under Bawumia's administration
Dr. Matthew Opoku Prempeh, Vice Presidential Candidate for the New Patriotic Party (NPP) in the 2024 elections, has reaffirmed the party’s commitment to protecting and enhancing the Free Senior High School (Free SHS) policy.
Speaking at the 70th-anniversary celebration of Asanteman Senior High School in Kumasi, Dr. Opoku Prempeh emphasized his dedication to supporting NPP flagbearer Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia in consolidating the gains of the policy if elected.
Acknowledging the transformative impact of the Free SHS initiative since its introduction, Dr. Opoku Prempeh—who played a key role in its implementation during his tenure as Minister for Education—stated that a Bawumia-led government would prioritize further investments in the programme.
He noted that providing access to quality education for every Ghanaian child, regardless of financial circumstances, would remain a cornerstone of their administration.
“The Free SHS and TVET programmes are pivotal to our nation’s development and the future of our youth. We will continue to invest in and expand these initiatives to create better opportunities for the next generation,” Dr. Opoku Prempeh stated.
He highlighted plans to strengthen the Free SHS programme, including increased funding, infrastructure improvements, and the introduction of modern curricula tailored to meet the demands of today’s job market. Addressing the students and staff of Asanteman Senior High School, he promised further infrastructure development to accommodate the growing student population and enhance the teaching and learning environment.
He urged students to remain focused on their studies, noting that education is the foundation for success.
The Headmaster of Asanteman Senior High School, Nathaniel Antwi Asamoah, praised the government’s commitment to quality education and its role in shaping future leaders.
He commended Dr. Opoku Prempeh for his contributions to advancing inclusive and equitable education in Ghana.
Hon. Francis Asenso Boakye, Member of Parliament for Bantama, also spoke at the event, highlighting the significant benefits the school and the educational sector have received under the NPP government.
He encouraged students to take their studies seriously, emphasizing that education is key to achieving success.
Additionally, Kumasi Metropolitan Chief Executive, Mr Sam Pyne, underscored the wide-reaching advantages of the Free SHS policy, describing it as a game-changer in Ghana’s educational landscape.
The event celebrated the legacy of Asanteman Senior High School while reaffirming the NPP’s commitment to building a future where education remains a priority for national development.
