Over 66,000 candidates sit BECE in Central Region

The 2025 edition of the Basic Education Certificate Examination (BECE) will officially commence tomorrow across the country, offering a pathway for Junior High School (JHS) leavers to transition into the secondary education system, under the government’s flagship Free Senior High School policy.
In the Central Region alone, a total of 66,765 candidates from 2,462 schools are taking part in the exams at 237 designated centres.
Speaking in an interview with journalist Samuel Nana Tawiah, the Central Regional Director of Education, Dr. Mrs. Juliet Dufie Otame, confirmed that the region is fully prepared to ensure the smooth and successful conduct of the examination.
Dr. Otame disclosed that of the total candidates, 33,305 are males and 33,760 are females.
Among them, 24,708 candidates are from public schools, while 7,597 are from private schools.
She also mentioned that the Directorate has organised training workshops for invigilators, who have since been deployed to the various examination centres.
According to her, all district education directorates in the region have put in place adequate measures to support the conduct of the exams.
She cautioned candidates to avoid examination malpractices and remain focused on their goals.
Meanwhile, the Member of Parliament for Abura Asebu Kwamankese and Minister for Communication at the Presidency, Mr. Felix Kwakye Ofosu, has encouraged BECE candidates in his constituency to study diligently and strive for excellent results.
Speaking during a donation exercise where he presented 3,000 mathematical sets to candidates in the area, Mr Kwakye Ofosu reassured the students of the NDC government’s commitment to providing a supportive and well-resourced environment at the Senior High School level.
He stated that successful candidates will benefit from a comfortable learning atmosphere, adding that “there is no shortage of food or essential resources in Senior High Schools under the current government, unlike in previous administrations.”
