President Mahama orders probe into WASSCE decline amid concerns over basic education
President John Dramani Mahama has directed a thorough investigation into the decline in West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE) results, expressing concern about the state of basic education in Ghana.
Speaking at the unveiling of the Ghana Made STEM Box Initiative in Accra on Thursday, held under the theme “Igniting Curiosity and Critical Thinking for Innovative Learning at the Basic Level,”, President Mahama emphasised the urgent need to identify factors contributing to the drop in student performance.
He highlighted the importance of improving teaching quality, curriculum delivery, school infrastructure, and examination administration processes.
“This investigation is critical to understanding why our students are struggling and to implement measures that will enhance learning outcomes nationwide,” President Mahama said.
The STEMBox initiative, aimed at equipping primary schools with science, technology, engineering, and mathematics resources, was launched as part of the government’s effort to strengthen foundational education and foster innovation among young learners.
Education stakeholders and the public have welcomed the probe, viewing it as a timely step toward addressing systemic challenges and ensuring that Ghanaian students are adequately prepared for future academic and professional success.
The recently released WASSCE results showed a notable decline in core subjects, sparking nationwide discussion and concerns about the quality of basic education in the country.
